ArtObet: A Magical Adventure of Artists from A to Z!

In this enchanting and charming production, a babysitter uses a box of 26 magical beads to teach a group of bright and energetic kids about art and artists from A (Anguissola) to Z (Zorach), with well-known figures such as Da Vinci, Goya, Monet, Van Gogh, and others featured along the way. With an appealing musical score, animated special effects superimposed over the live action, and lovely images of selected works, the program presents art concepts in a fun and accessible manner for children ages 3 to 8. For example, Japanese master Hokusai and his 36 paintings of Mount Fuji are used to teach about perspective and the effects of seasons on a single subject.; other segments illustrate how Monet’s impressionism conveys emotion, and how the eyes of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa seem to follow viewers across the room. Each master’s approach or style is encapsulated in a simple rhyme, while youngsters ask good questions, make silly comments, giggle, and add to the fun. Based on an inspired early-reading curriculum by Eleanor Palm and masterfully directed by award-winning filmmaker Carol Pineau, this is highly recommended. Editor’s Choice. (C.Block)

Review of ArtObet: A Magical Adventure of Artists from A to Z! from the American Library Association’s Booklist Online May 2012 edition:

“This delightful program acquaints kids with artists from A (Anguissola) to Z (Zorach). Five culturally diverse children and their favorite babysitter learn about the artists by peeking into some magical beads that allow them to see a letter that matches the respective artist, beginning with female Renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola. While many of the painters and sculptors, such as daVinci, Rodin, Monet, and Whistler are familiar names, the group also includes Asian artists Katsushika Hokusai, Xia Gui, and Yun Shouping and American painter Joshua Johnson. Representative artwork of each artist is shown before the children act out a scene in which they “jump inside the paintings.” An accompanying poem introduces facts about the respective artist in this film that combines animation, period music, and live action footage. The first of a proposed series, this engaging production is a novel way to introduce art to young viewers.”

“Our children watched the DVD with me and enjoyed the paintings and the music playing. As the artist was introduced we all found ourselves repeating the name, including our almost 2 year old. The art is just beautiful and the music soothing.

So … how will we use this in our fall school schedule? Our younger ones will be starting a weekly study of the ABC’s and as we talk about animals, and other words that start with each letter we will include the matching artists. Watching that part of the show again and looking up some more paintings, either online or at the library. The study will be even expanded more for Kenna, she will do online research of the artist for the week and write a one page paper about either the artist or one of their most famous works of art. Letting this help expand her research and writing skills. Ending the week with a kitchen table painting session, recreating a piece of art studies. With a variety of ages (2 to 14), I am sure we will have some fun outcomes )”

Truly for All Ages

“Artobet is a great video for introducing fabulous artists to kids in a memorable and entertaining way. Artobet has an entertaining storyline and catchy poem that’s easy to memorize.
What I really liked is that Artobet focused on a wide variety of artists from many countries and many time frames. A Van Gogh painting might be familiar, but in this video kids will learn about artists like Hokusai who painted The Great Wave off Kanagawa as part of his 36 views of Mt. Fuji series.

My kids are teens, but even we still enjoyed watching Artobet. The information is solid and the chant for remembering the different artists is very catchy. Artobet teaches art, history, art techniques, and more. This is a video that truly makes art appreciation fun!”

Helping fill the void in resources for homeschoolers

Amanda Werner is a homeschooling blogger who finds, “Incorporating a study of the artists has always been hard for me in our homeschooling. Overall, the product [ArtObet] is a real gem in a market oversaturated with nonsense or twaddle type materials. This is one DVD I would be proud to recommend to other homeschooling families… Artobet is another one of those products I wish would have been made sooner because the educational value of this product is worth every penny. I love the fact that this product incorporated the alphabet and the great artists of history into one.”

Blogger Mama Jenn says of ArtObet: “To say I was impressed with this DVD is an understatement! My kids were exposed to famous artist in a relevant, yet memorable way. I was amazed that even my 4 year olds were chanting along with some of the poems written for each of the artists! I was most impressed when, thanks to ArtObet, my daughter recognized one of Edgar Degas’ paintings in her dance class! I just love when my kids are able to take something that they have learned and associate it with their everyday interactions and experiences! I knew my kids would be interested in the art DVD. What I didn’t expect was for them to absolutely LOVE the DVD! In fact, they have requested to watch it a number of times since we first previewed it! ArtObet has re-introduced my children to art in a way like no other!”

In her marvelous review, blogger Obviously MARvelous describers her family’s experience with ArtObet: “Makenna decided to spend this Saturday taking some time to watch ArtObet alone in her room. When she came downstairs after it had ended I asked her how she enjoyed the movie. Her response was “I didn’t like it, I loved it!” and then proceeded to tell me about Whistler. Soon after she began to explain about who Leonardo da Vinci was and that his painting, the Mona Lisa, has eyes that seem to follow you wherever you go. It was awesome to not only see her so knowledgeable after this film, but to see her so passionate while learning about art!”

Mommy’s Memorandum says of ArtObet: A Magical Adventure of Artists from A to Z! : “The girls adore this movie. They are discovering the world of art at a level I’m not able to share with them, but together, as we learn, the exploration is a beautiful journey. I want my children to appreciate the arts. I want them to develop their own talents and see the beauty in many things. I feel Artobet is a step in these directions…. I am always surprised at how many artists are captured on this DVD. There are many I recognize, others whose work I am familiar with and still others that I was inspired to look up and learn more about their work and them. The girls love repeating the artists names and the giggle at the children in the movie who “become” the art. It really brings paintings to life.”
